Definition: Google Search Appliance


A rack-mounted computer from Google that was sold to companies to index their documents. Introduced in 2002, the device was dropped in 2018 in favor of its cloud-based replacement.

Using the Google File System (GFS), appliances were available that indexed million of documents. The devices supported searching across servers, intranets, databases, hosted services and content management systems. It functioned like a Web search engine; crawling the content in the enterprise and producing master indexes of all the data. See Google File System and Google search.
