Three Sensors
S1677 requires three sensing systems in the vehicle: camera, radar and LIDAR. The combination works in all weather conditions but is more expensive. EV makers must also complete 50 thousand miles of driving with a human driver in the driver's seat, and a steering wheel and pedals cannot be eliminated.
This bill is very controversial because it prevents Tesla from selling cars in the state. Tesla is the sensor outlier and uses only cameras, which work well in adequate lighting conditions. But in really bad weather, multiple sensors work better for self driving. In addition, Tesla taxis have no steering wheels and pedals. See
