The designation in this encyclopedia for the Twitter social networking service after being renamed "X" in July 2023. For more about X naming, see
X.com. See
Twitter.
Since Twitter launched in 2006, numerous Twitter terms were created and cited millions of times in the media. Time will tell how long it takes before, or even if, all the Twitter terms are changed or forgotten (see
Twitterese). More than two years after the name change, people still refer to Twitter and tweets. In fact, a comment such as "Did you see that tweet on X" is not uncommon. Technically tweets are "posts" on X.
Basic Posting Is Free
Basic posting is still free, but there are three paid tiers under X Premium as follows, all of which provide access to the Grok chatbot. There are also professional tiers for commercial and government entities, and there are creator subscriptions that allow people to charge for exclusive content. See
Grok.
X Premium Basic
Provides posts up to 25,000 characters, which everyone on X can read. All X Premium levels include text formatting, folder bookmarking, custom app icons, higher reply ranking and more.
X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue)
X Premium adds a blue checkmark and limits ads, and users can share ad revenue in replies to posted content. X Premium also provides ID verification and greater reply prioritization along with media management via Media Studio.
X Premium Plus (Premium+)
The top tier eliminates most ads and provides greatest reply prioritization along with advanced Grok features. See
X.com and
Twitter.
