Definition: AGI

(1) For advanced geospatial intelligence, see DOD intelligence glossary.

(2) (Artificial General Intelligence) A machine intelligence that is equal to or greater than that of a human being. AGI (strong AI, true AI) learns on its own and can solve many tasks. All the major AI companies, such as OpenAI, DeepMind and Anthropic, are aiming for AGI. See ChatGPT.

A true general-purpose AI has people concerned that too much control will be given to machines in the future. The predictions for when AGI becomes commonplace run the gamut from "very soon" to 2040 and beyond. See AI anxiety and OpenAI AGI stages.

Super Intelligence
Super intelligence, also known as "artificial super intelligence" (ASI), goes beyond AGI, meaning that it is greater than human intelligence. In various areas, we are already at that point; for example, no human can translate a hundred spoken languages.

The only guarantee is that for the foreseeable future, the terminology used to define futuristic AI will be contradictory. See AI stages, OpenAI stages and technology singularity.

AI Will Reign Supreme
MIT professor Max Tegmark's best-selling book postulates an AI that far exceeds human intelligence and literally takes over.
